The Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, a member of the State System of Higher Education, was founded in 1866 as Keystone State Normal School, became Kutztown State Teachers College in 1928, Kutztown State College in 1960, and achieved university status in 1983.

Today, Kutztown University is a modern, comprehensive institution. It has been accredited by organizations like The American Chemical Society (program approval), Middle States Commission on Higher Education & the Pennsylvania Department of Education, AACSB - Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, COSMA - Commission on Sport Management Accreditation, CSWE - Council on Social Work Education, NASAD - National Association of Schools of Art and Design, IACS - International Association of Counseling Services, Inc., NCACE - National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education, and NASM - National Association of Schools of Music.

Kutztown offers 100 major programs through four colleges to meet the varied educational needs of the student community. The college offers a rigorous academic environment coupled with a teacher training program that has been highly successful in producing top-class academic professionals.

KU's liberal arts and sciences programs cover the foundational aspects of many academic disciplines including science and math to history and literature. However, also included in the offerings are programs for students with a technology bent and also interdisciplinary courses covering arts, humanities, international studies, and social and behavioral sciences. The College of Visual and Performing Arts helps students develop their talent for art, design, music, and communication. The dedicated faculty is known to help draw the best out of students through close interaction and encouragement. Students are also provided frequent access to performances and exhibitions of the works of renowned artists and performers.
