Established in 1865, Lehigh University is a privately-owned research university. Businessman Asa Packer was the founder of this institution. An amount of $500,000 was donated by him to create a whole new institution for the “intellectual and moral improvement” of the people.
The University’s three campuses are located in Bethlehem, Pa., and comprise 1,600 acres. Lehigh’s main academic Asa Packer Campus, encompassing approximately 360 acres on the north slope of South Mountain overlooking Bethlehem. The 500-acre Murray H. Goodman campus includes the Murray H. Goodman Stadium and other athletic fields, as well as the 6,000-seat Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center, the Philip Rauch Field House, the Cundey Varsity House, the Lewis Indoor Tennis Facility, and the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh bought Mountaintop campus from Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1986. The campus contains 670 acres of woods and a 72-acre research site with 8 buildings, including a landmark tower building visible for miles around.

Moreover, each class holds an average of 28 students. Other than this, the university offers more than 2,300 programs and courses, including 100 plus undergraduate degrees, 87 research-based Ph.D., certificate, professional master's degree, and 20 plus interdisciplinary programs. Apart from this, the university offers 250 study abroad programs in over 70 countries. The university has a total of 540 full-time faculty and 95 percent of faculty hold terminal degrees in their fields
Lehigh University has proudly shaped the personalities of a number of Pulitzer Prize winners, Fulbright Fellows, members of the National Academy of Sciences, members of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and National Medal of Science winners. Some of the known alumni include Ali Al-Naimi (Saudi Arabia's former Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources), Harry J. Buncke (father of microsurgery), Stephen J. Benkovic (known chemist and National Medal of Science recipient) and Pongpol Adireksarn (deputy prime minister of Thailand).
