Louisiana State University is a renowned public research university based in Baton Rouge. It was established by the General Assembly of Louisiana in 1853 as Seminary of Learning. Although the institution was founded in 1853, classes began on January 2, 1860. The university is affiliated to APLU, URA, SURA, and ORAU. The institution also operates various research projects which are sponsored by renowned agencies like NIH, NEH, NSF, and NASA. Apart from this, LSU owns and administers CAMD, a prominent science, and engineering laboratory.

LSU is located on more than 1,000 acres in the southern part of the city near the Mississippi River. LSU is also distinguished by the five historic and beautiful lakes that surround the area referred to as the LSU lakes. The campus is home to two Indian mounds created by Native Americans over 5,000 years ago, located near the northwest corner of campus. The campus includes college buildings, libraries, athletic fields, auditoriums, a student health center, etc. There are hundreds of magnolia and oak trees on the campus that add to its natural beauty. Apart from this, the campus also possesses various apartments and residence halls that offer accommodation to its students and staff.

Ourso College of Business, and College of Agriculture have also been ranked amongst the top colleges in respective fields.

LSU has won a total of 47 team National Championships, including 43 NCAA-sponsored national titles. The university has a total of 31,761 students, which includes 5,841 postgraduates and 25,920 undergraduates. The academic staff of the university comprises of 1,361 members and the administrative staff has around 3,799 members. LSU’s game design and graphic design programs are ranked among the top 25 in the nation and LSU’s School of Veterinary Medicine is one of only 30 accredited colleges of veterinary medicine in the U.S

The university has a list of notable alumni who have gained recognition at national as well as the international level. Walter C. Williams, a great aerospace engineer, is an alumnus of LSU. A few other noble laureates of the university are James Carville (Bill Clinton's Former Presidential Campaign Adviser), Maxime Faget (Mercury Space Capsule's Designer), Michael I. Jordan (Computer Science Professor at UC Berkeley), Joanne Woodward (Actress is known for her role in The Three Faces of Eve), Nic Pizzolatto (Screenwriter and Author) and Johnny Pott (An American Professional Golfer).
