What are the eligibility requirements?


The eligibility criteria and language requirements for applying to different programs offered to international students at LSU are given below:

Undergraduate Requirements —

International undergraduates must secure a high school degree or diploma equivalent to the high school US diploma to be eligible for admission at LSU. Also, to enroll in an undergraduate program, the GPA must be at least 3.0 or B grade per the US 4-point grading system. An SAT or ACT score may be increase chances of admission to some programs.

Graduate Requirements —

International graduates must show 16 years of formal studies through valid transcripts. These years must include 12 years of high school studies and 4 years of post-secondary studies. A GRE or GMAT score may be increase chances of admission to some programs.

Country-Specific Requirements for Indian Students

Indian students should note that the bachelor degrees obtained after 3 years of coursework are not considered valid in the United States. Therefore, they must have a bachelor degree obtained after 4 years of studies. However, they can apply with a 3-year bachelor degree only if they have already completed one year studying for a master degree from a recognized college or institution.

What are the documents needed for the application?

Other Fees and Charges 2021-2022

There are many other costs, fees, and charges for different material, resources, documents, items etc., some of which may or may not apply to international students. Some examples include:

  • International Student Status Compliance fee of USD 50 per semester
  • International Cultural Center fee of USD 10 per semester
  • Additional cost of USD 4,500 per dependent

Scholarships & Financial Aid


Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?


Louisiana State University does not provide specific scholarships to international students. However, international freshman applicants who have studied in an American school or high school located in another nation can apply for freshman scholarships by submitting their SAT or ACT scores.

Scholarships offered by LSU can range from USD 500 to a complete waiver of tuition fees. The students can use the Common Application portal to check the status of their scholarship applications. Merit-based scholarships are offered via the Stamps Scholars Program to undergraduate freshmen with excellent academic grades. Students need to apply for this scholarship program via the Common Application portal before mid-December. The selected applicants will have to appear for an interview to get this scholarship.

The Stamps Scholars Program provides a yearly sum of USD 50,000 to the students, which can be used to cover the entire cost of the program and the living expenses. Apart from that, they also get an enrichment fund of USD 14,000 and a laptop stipend of USD 1,100 as a one-time award. They also get an opportunity to receive USD 1,550 extra every year by participating in the President’s Future Leaders in Research program. Another scholarship called the President’s Alumni Scholars Award offers similar benefits to students and includes USD 2,000 as a study abroad stipend.

Note: Scholarship deadlines and amounts may vary with progressive years. Students must check the exact deadlines and minimum requirements with their respective departments and apply for the desirable awards on time to make their profiles considerable.

When do the admissions start?


LSU follows a semester-based calendar and offers admissions in three intakes:

How do I start my application?


All international students may apply to the university digitally or online.

Undergraduate Application

Like most of the US universities, LSU accepts undergraduate applications via the Common Application at apply.commonapp.org/login. The steps to apply are very easy and simply to follow. Do as the portal says and submit the application after a thorough review. Please note that both the portals are equally considered, none is preferred over the other.

Graduate Application

What are the steps to an undergraduate application?


International undergraduates need to apply via the Common Application portal. However, students should check the entry requirements of the program they wish to join before starting the application process. International undergraduates may follow the steps below while applying for an undergraduate program.

Step 1: International undergraduates can start by logging in to the Common Application at apply.commonapp.org.

Step 2: Now, students can create an account first, and those who have already registered on this portal can log in with their username and password to start their applications. Once students log in to this portal, they can use the ‘College Search’ option to find Louisiana State University and use the ‘Add to My Colleges’ button to add it to their list of colleges.

What are the steps to a graduate application?


International graduates can use the Graduate Application Portal of LSU to apply for a program of their choice. However, it is recommended that they go through the entry requirements and application checklist properly before applying. The following steps can prove useful for international graduates:

Step 1: International graduates can start by visiting the Graduate Application Portal of LSU by visiting applygrad.lsu.edu. New students can register on this portal by submitting their email address, name, birth date, and other details. Upon submitting these details, a temporary PIN will be sent to their email address. They will need to enter this PIN to proceed with their application.

Step 2: Students can set a password and click on the ‘Start New Application’ option at this stage. They can select the term to which they want admission using the dropdown menu that appears on clicking on this option.

Step 3: Finally, students can click on ‘Create an Application’, open it, and start filling in the necessary details. Once they duly fill the form, they can attach the necessary documents and submit their application before the tentative deadline.

When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?


It is advisable for international students to apply before the deadline to increase their chances of admission to their desired programs. On average, students must apply at least 90 days before the semester to which they seek entry commences. Students also need to provide all the necessary documents to be considered for admission.

Undergraduate students can check their application status through their myLSU accounts. Graduate applicants can check via the Graduate School website. Once students submit their English proficiency test scores and SAT/ACT scores, the application checklist is updated within 24 hours on the LSU portal.

What are the chances of getting into this university?


The chances of getting admission to LSU depend on a candidate’s grades and English language scores. Candidates should also check the country-specific requirements before applying for a specific program. For instance, Indian students seeking entry in the freshman year should have a minimum GPA of 55 on a 100-point scale.

Part Time Work While Studying


Can I work while studying here?


International students with F-1 or J-1 visas can apply for on-campus jobs with proper authorization from International Services. Students must have the following things in place while working on-campus:

  • A valid and unexpired passport
  • A valid and unexpired I-20
  • The latest copy of I-94
  • Students working with an on-campus vendor but are not on the payroll of LSU will have to procure a special work permit from the vendor
  • Students with an F-1 visa can apply for off-campus work opportunities via CPT, Economic Hardship, or OPT authorization
  • J-1 students working off-campus will be considered as participating in Academic Training

Graduate Assistantships

International students working as Teaching Assistants need to fulfill the language requirements set by the university. Some departments might also ask the students to demonstrate additional English language proficiency to be considered for these teaching assistantships. The proficiency in the English language will be verified through a 30-minute oral interview.

Note: International students are advised to check the conditions of working in a foreign country on their study visa. They are also advised to confirm any specific instructions on the same from their respective departments and faculties. Under no circumstances should they be found compromising with the law and order of the country.
