Mercer University was founded in 1833 by some Georgia Baptists. The school was run by a Baptist minister and spiritual leader - Father Adiel Sherwood. The school was named after Jesse Mercer, who was a prominent Baptist leader. He was the first chairman of the Mercer board of trustees. The school has come a long way from its humble beginning and is now a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate, and professional education.
The university has campuses in Macon, Atlanta, Savannah, and Columbus, two regional academic centers in the state, a university press, and five teaching hospitals. The School of Medicine in 2012 opened a clinical site in Columbus for third- and fourth-year students. In 2021, it will expand to a full four-year campus of the medical school. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges

Mercer University is a multi-locational university with several colleges offering a whole range of subjects. Students who cannot take classroom enrolment can quickly sign up for their online program. These are convenient, flexible, and are fully supported by the faculty. Besides, they have access to all the resources of the college. The three important tenets are quality learning, leadership development, and community involvement. The Local Engagement Against Poverty (LEAP) is a student drive initiative that addresses the problems affecting those living below the poverty line in their local communities.
The University's Alumni Association, governed by a National Board of Directors. Around 82,000 Mercer alumni, including graduates of Tift College, live in all 50 states and in more than 90 countries. Some notable alumni are Steve Berry, popular best-selling author of 19 novels including several New York Times bestsellers, Big James Henderson, a power-lifter who competed in the International Powerlifting Federation and won five world bench press titles from 1994 to 1998, Leila Denmark, a nationally-renowned pediatrician who practiced medicine past her 100th birthday, John Birch, missionary and spy in China during World War II; namesake of the John Birch Society, and numerous other professionals who have excelled in their careers.
