Established in 1971, the National University is a private and non-profit university that offers about more than 100 programs to choose from, including masters and bachelor's degrees along with certificates and credentials. It also provides 100 percent, online classes. Transfer-friendly programs and scholarships are available so that one can save on his/her tuition with the CCC-ADT Transfer Scholarship or Transfer to Success Scholarship. This private university is affiliated with the NAICU. There are currently 2,721 part- and full-time academic staff in the university. The total number of students is 23,909 with 12,089 being undergraduates and 11,820 being postgraduates.

The university is headquartered in La Jolla in California. It offers degree programs to other colleges in California with one of the campuses being in Nevada. It focuses mostly on adult learning with interactive sessions like that of interactive multimedia, streaming videos, and online real-time classes. The university is accredited to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It is also accredited to the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). National University has two colleges and four professional schools under the same. The colleges are the College of Letters and Sciences and Sanford College of Education. The schools are the School of Business and Management and School of Engineering and Computing among others. The notable alumni include Chris Brown who is the Mayor of Hawthorne, California and Ocky Clark who is a runner among others.

The National University’s Founder David Chigos, who was a retired United States Navy Lieutenant commander and was a director of the employee training for General Dynamics Corporation in San Diego, saw the need for a non-traditional university education format with high-demand and relevant degree programs so as to serve the working adults. In November of 1971, the National University had organized as a private, non-profit institute with 27 students who were attending classes in 1972. The National’s first commencement ceremony had included 143 students. In the year 1975, the university had purchased two properties on Camino del Rio in Mission Valley. Two years after in 1977, it opened up facilities like in Kearny Mesa and then expanded in San Diego County. That was the time when the university had 1,000 alumni.
