NU adopts a concentrated and exceptional learning model wherein students are provided with teaching on one course per month. The idea is to allow its students to focus on a single subject at a time and master its concepts to the depth. This also saves time and money especially in case of the international students as they can take up all the 12 courses (generally spread across 1.5-2 years within 12 months).

Eligibility & Documents Required


What are the eligibility requirements?


Apart from the minimum education qualification, International students from non-English-speaking countries must undergo standardized English proficiency exams accepted worldwide.

Undergraduate Level Eligibility Requirements

The undergraduate-level entry requirements for international students are as follows:

  • Grade 12 in relevant discipline with a minimum GPA of 2 out of 4
  • English proficiency test (either of three):
    • TOEFL: Minimum score of 70
    • IELTS: Minimum 5.5 bands
    • PTE: Minimum score of 50
    • International English Proficiency Test (iTEP): Minimum score of 5
  • SAT or ACT (not mandatory but considered)

Graduate Level Eligibility Requirements

The graduate-level entry requirements for international students are as follows:

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 2.5 out of 4
  • English proficiency test (either of three):
    • TOEFL: Minimum score of 79
    • IELTS: Minimum 6 bands
    • PTE: Minimum score of 58 (above 79 for MBA)
    • International English Proficiency Test (iTEP): Minimum score of 5
  • GRE or GMAT (optional)

What documents are needed for the application?


The documents required at the time of application at National University are as follows:

Requirements at the time of joining NU:

    • Foreign bank: Minimum balance of $33,500 (written on bank letterhead with seal, date, and type of account)
    • US bank: Minimum ending balance of $3,722 (statements of two consecutive months from a US bank)
    • Section C of Affidavit of Support for international education (stamped/attested/signed by the sponsor’s bank)

Application & Tuition Fees


Is there any application fees?


International students need to pay a non-refundable application fee of $60 for applying to any graduate or undergraduate course. This payment needs to be made online at the time of application via international debit or credit cards.


What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?


The tuition fee as well as the application fee for all the courses is the same. Nonetheless, the fee may vary with the level of courses offered.

Since all NU programs can be pursued using a monthly approach, the tuition for pursuing the same is not available in annual format but a quarter and unit format. Refer to the table below to get an idea on the same:

Level of Courses Offered

NU offers seven levels of educational courses, viz.

  • Undergraduate (UG) levels: 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500
  • Graduate or Postgraduate (PG) levels: 500, 600, and 700

So far, the fee for all the levels in bachelors as well as masters is the same. However, with increasing levels, this cost may vary. Fee increases with levels, which means that variation would be experienced in the following way:

  • Fee of bachelor’s degrees would always be lesser than that of master’s degrees
  • Fee of UG level 500 would always be lesser than PG level 500
  • Fee of UG levels 100, 200, 300, and 400 may be lesser than that of UG level 500
  • Fee of PG levels 500 and 600 may be lesser than that of PG level 700

Scholarships & Financial Aid


Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?


National University awards its students with need and merit-based scholarships as well as financial assistance.

International Scholarships

International Student Scholarship for Prospective Students:

  • Criteria: Applicants must meet the minimum eligibility requirements to get considered
  • Award: An award of 50% tuition reimbursement of the initial four courses (modules) of the chosen academic program

International Student Leadership Scholarship for Current International Students:

  • Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate extraordinary leadership qualities in either academics or community service
  • Award: An award of 50% tuition reimbursement of any two courses in the current academic program

Financial Assistance

Though the international students are not eligible to avail the United States Federal or State Financial Aid, NU offers transfer-friendly programs and scholarships. This helps students save their tuition fee using either of the two options:

  • CCC-ADT Transfer Scholarship
  • Transfer to Success Scholarship

Admission Process


When do the admissions start?


National University follows a continuous-based academic calendar, which means that admissions happen round the year. Thus, there are no fixed intakes or deadlines to be followed or considered at the time of application. Though it is always good to apply in advance.

Early application: 2 to 4 months in advance

All the applicants must apply two-four months before the desired date of commencement of a program to get sufficient time for F1 Visa process.

The Office of International Affairs is responsible to look after all the queries and applications of the international students who apply at NU. They are also responsible for giving a comprehensive resource of:

As soon as international students come into the application loop of NU, they are assigned an International Admission Advisor. Applicants can contact their respective advisors to get details on specific course deadlines.


What are the steps to the application process? Does this involve an interview round?


Unlike other US Universities, National University requires both graduate and undergraduate applicants to follow the same steps to apply through its application portal.

Refer to the given below step-by-step approach for the same:

Step 1: Click on Apply Now button on top of any page of the university website and following window will open up.

Step 2: Choose the International Student Application option from the list of application options available.

Step 3: Read Tab 1 and check the admission requirements carefully.

Step 4: Get ready with application information and documents.

Step 5: Click on Tab 2 and note the fee requirements.

Step 6: On Tab 3, check document requirements that need to be uploaded/submitted.

Step 7: On Tab 4, students need to complete an ‘Intent to Register’ form.

Step 8: Next, click on ‘Register’ at the top of the page and create a new account at NU.

Step 9: Enter the required details such as first name, last name, and date of birth.

Step 10: Then click on ‘I agree’ checkbox and press ‘Continue’ button.

Step 11: To complete the registration steps, fill in the necessary details again along with an active email address.

Step 12: After this, start filling the step-by-step-form as given below:

The application goes as follow:

Tab 1: The foremost step includes entering the application objective, personal information, educational background, and visa information (if any).

Tab 2: The second step includes paying an application of $60.

Tab 3: The third step involved submitting the required documents, which are evaluated at the same time.

Tab 4: The fourth, and the last, step provides information on university seminars.

The application is not very extensive, hence it is recommended to keep the supporting documents and international debit/credit card handy to save time.


When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?


NU has simplified and streamlined its course application process to such an extent that the students can get enrolled in any chosen program right away. Since NU has rolling deadlines for all the courses it offers, there is no decision deadline either. The respective International Admission Advisors assigned to the international students can be contacted anytime to get an update on the application status.


Student Diversity & Preferred Profile


How difficult is it to get an admission? What is the acceptance rate of the university for international students?


With an acceptance rate of almost 89%, National University does not have a very selective admission committee. They prefer the good profiles for sure with overall experiences yet they accept students with average profiles easily.

In some cases, graduate applicants with less than 2.5 GPA in bachelors (which is the normal eligibility criterion) have also been admitted to the university with the help of a Bridge Program. International students, however, need to provide proof of their English proficiency.

Nevertheless, an important point to note here is that even with such a less acceptance ratio, the class size at NU is relatively small. It means that each batch has limited seats making it difficult for below-average students to procure admission. Limited seats also read to imparting quality education while maintaining a student to faculty ratio of 17:1.

The university ensures to keep a small class size for better information exchange and educational conduct. This also allows students to perform better in academic projects and laboratories while working closely under the direct guidance of their professors.

As the chart shows above, more than 73% of classes have 20 students or less, while classes with more than 20 and less 50 students are less than 27%. An important point to note here is that there is no class or course offered with more than 50 seats, which makes it easier for professors to pay utmost attention to their students.

The Federal Work-Study Program of National University allows its students to work part-time during their study tenure. International students must adhere to the rules and regulations of working in the USA.

  • Both full-time and part-time students can work while studying at NU

  • Working hours should not be exceeded by the amount of Federal Work-Study Program Award
