Situated in Norfolk, Virginia, Old Dominion University is a doctoral research university. Founded in 1930 by the College of William and Mary, it is the second oldest educational institution of the United States. In 1962, this university was named Old Dominion College. It started providing master's degree programs from 1964 onwards and Ph.D. programs since 1971. It has been recognized as a research university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

This university has one graduate school, which offers doctoral degrees, education specialist degrees, master's degrees, and graduate certificates. It also has eight colleges which are Perry Honors College, College of Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Batten College of Engineering and Technology, Darden College of Education and Professional Studies, Strome College of Business and College of Arts and Letters.

The Perry Honors College offers Honor College Courses, General Education Honors Courses, Contract Courses, and Departmental Courses. College of Sciences offers undergraduate, graduate, minor and certificate courses. It comprises biological sciences, computer science, chemistry and biochemistry, mathematics and statistics, physics, psychology and ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences departments.

The Darden College of Education and Professional Studies offers undergraduate, graduate, minor and certificate programs and comprises departments, including Department of Communication Disorders and Special Education, Department of Counseling and Human Services, Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, Department of Human Movement Sciences, Department of STEM Education and Professional Studies, Department of Teaching and Learning.

The Strome College of Business offers undergraduate, graduate, minor and certificate courses and maintains departments like School of Accountancy, Department of Economics, Department of Finance, Department of Information Technology & Decision Sciences, Department of International Business, Department of Management, Department of Marketing, School of Public Service, Master of Business Administration.

The College of Arts and Letters offers undergraduate, graduate, minors, teacher preparation, pre-law advising, and several other programs in communication and writing. It has departments such as art, African American and African studies, Asian studies, communication, and theatre arts, English, history, humanities, interdisciplinary studies, international studies, music, philosophy, and religious studies, political science and geography, sociology and criminal justice, women's studies and world languages and cultures.
