Founded in the year 1887, Pratt Institute is a privately-funded university in New York. It was established by American industrialist Charles Pratt with an objective to offer formal education in the fields of architecture, engineering and fine arts. It has accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university holds affiliations from the American Collegiate Athletic Association and the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The university has its main campus in Brooklyn spread across an area of 25 acres next to Brooklyn Tech Triangle in the Clinton Hill neighbourhood of the city. The site features an assortment of buildings showcasing wondrous architecture, pathways, parking areas and green spaces. Most of the buildings on the campus were built before World War II and hold historical significance. The six-storey Romanesque Revival is the main university building that houses administrative offices, classrooms and the studios of the schools of art and design. The university provides state-of-the-art academic, administrative and support facilities to ensure excellent learning experience for the students.

The university also operates an online bookstore to allow the students to access books easily and quickly. Additionally, the campus has seven residences that can accommodate up to 1600 students. Apart from this, Pratt has a satellite campus located in the popular administrative division of Manhattan and an additional institute campus in Utica, New York. The academic structure of the university is composed of six schools housing over 28 departments and sections. Here, the students can choose from more than 22 undergraduate majors and 25 postgraduate majors. The institution extends career-oriented education in architecture, design, liberal arts and information science. The students can also pursue a range of dual degrees and advanced certificate courses from the university. At present, the university has a total of 4,875 students, out of which are 3,483 undergraduates and 1,392 postgraduates, from 47 states of the U.S. and 78 countries of the world.

Pierce (Teacher and Astronomer), Irving Langmuir (recipient of the 1932 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), Irvin Leigh Matus (Author), Gus Edson (American Cartoonist) and Donald Genaro (Retired Industrial Designer). Further, the alumni association of the university named The Black Alumni of Pratt (BAP), founded in 1990, ensures more scholastic and professional opportunities to the students and alumni of African and Latino origin.
