Purdue University, founded in the year 1869, is a public research institution with its flagship campus located in West Lafayette, Indiana. In 1874, the first buildings on the campus including the Boiler and Gas House, the Military Hall and Gymnasium, the Ladies Hall, Purdue Hall, and the Pharmacy Building were completed. In 1874, classes begin with six instructors and 39 students. In the following year, John Bradford Harper became the first graduate who earned a graduate degree in chemistry. The year 1889 witnessed the first issue of the Purdue yearbook, the Debris and the student newspaper, the Exponent. Purdue University Airport was established as the first university-owned airport in the country in 1934.
With campus locations throughout the state, students can choose to pursue their studies at the main campus or explore other options including Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW), Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), Purdue Northwest, Purdue Polytechnic Institute, and Purdue University Global. Purdue’s alumni network consists of 23 notable Astronauts, including Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan. R. Games Slayter, who graduated from Purdue with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, was among the one to create the world's first commercial fiberglass product. Two of the Chemistry professors at Purdue are profound noble laureates. The Professor of Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Purdue, Arun K. Ghosh, is a pioneer in inventing HIV medicine. The Golden gate bridge engineer, Charles Alton Ellis, was a former graduate and also served as a professor of civil engineering for 12 years at Purdue University.
