Established in 1872, Saint Peter's University is a private institution for higher education and research in Jersey City. Founded as Saint Peter's College on Warren Street, the institution was closed down in 1918 and re-opened in 1930. The New Jersey State Secretary for Higher Education granted it the university status in 2012 and thus adopted its current name. The university has accreditations from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Accreditation (CCNE), International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE), and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
The main campus of Saint Peter's University is barely 8 km west of New York City. The university also operates Meadowlands Campus in collaboration with Bergen Community College, located about 10 km from the main campus. Spread across an area of 30 acres, the main campus features five academic buildings, seven residence halls, administrative offices, and athletic facilities. Both it's libraries together have about 290,000 books, 750 periodicals, 10,000 full-text periodicals, and 1,200 links to government and academic Internet resources. Other on-campus facilities include a bookstore, coffee shop, cafeteria, swimming pool, weight room, gymnasiums, and computer labs. The university provides an on-campus housing facility to students in apartment-style accommodations.

The university has about 3,233 students from 27 states of the U.S. and over 40 countries of the world. The academic staff of the university consists of 113 full-time and 238 part-time affiliates, who are highly knowledgeable and qualified. The undergraduate faculty-student ratio at the university is 13:1.
The Students' Association of the university runs over 50 organizations that focus on distinct educational and recreational interests such as debate, entertainment, hosting, drama, and music. Saint Peter's University has varsity teams of baseball, basketball, hockey, tennis, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, swimming, diving, volleyball, soccer, bowling, and co-ed cheerleading. Both men's and women's teams participate in Division-I intercollegiate athletic competitions.
The university has a vast alumni network of about 33,000 graduates across the globe. Will Durant (writer and philosopher), Robert Menendez (politician), Ken Jennings (stage actor), Thomas Meaney (former United States district judge), Angela Shapiro (Fox Television Studios' president), Robert Emmet Hurley (basketball coach), Joseph Tumulty (politician), Richard Rinaldi (former basketball player), George Jesus Borjas (American economist), John Henning (political analyst and news reporter), Nicholas Cifarelli (physician) and Keydren Clark (professional basketball player) are some of the notable alumni of the university.
