San Francisco State University (SFSU) has been operating as a state university since 1972 but was originally established in 1899 as a state-run school. It is among the 23 universities in the California State University system. There are 6 academic colleges and 4 campuses located in Romberg Tiburon Center, Downtown Campus, Sierra Nevada Field Campus, and the main campus at Holloway Ave. The university offers 94 master's degrees, 118 bachelor's degrees, 26 teaching credentials, and 5 doctoral degrees. There are 12 athletic teams that compete at NCAA Division II level. SFSU has accreditation by Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The main campus of SFSU is 141 acres and is located about 2 miles away from the Pacific coast. There are 12 academic buildings, 8 residential buildings and communities, a gymnasium, Cox Stadium and Maloney Field. The vibrant campus attracts students from all over the world. There is also a Mashouf Wellness Centre that offers wellness activities and opportunities for recreation. San Francisco State University has produced several notable alumni in the fields of science, arts, and politics. Actor and actresses including Annette Bening, the voice of Lois on Family Guy, Alex Borstein, Dana Carvey, and Danny Glover have all been associated with SFSU. The lead guitarist for Metallica, Kirk Hammett, was also a student at the university. The co-inventor of the microprocessor, Stanley Mazor and producer of Pixar Animation Studios, Jonas Rivera have also studied here. Former U.S. Congressman George Miller and Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif have graduated from SFSU. The 41st Mayor of San Francisco, Willie Brown graduated from the university in 1955.
