Established in 1911, Southern Methodist University is a private research university that is associated with the Universities Research Association, American Council on Education, International Association of Methodist-related Schools, and Oak Ridge Associated Universities. The first college that opened at the university was the Medical College. Over the years, as the number of enrolments increased, the university decided to expand its area. In 1914, at a meeting of the General Conference, the university was recognized as the connectional institution for all the conferences.

The main university campus is spread across an area of 237 acres. The campus features a presidential center and was ranked as the cleanest campus in America in 2016. Besides the main campus, the university has two other campuses, namely the Taos campus and Plano campus. The Taos campus is spread over 423 acres of land. The classes between semesters and during the intersessions are held at the campus. It also hosts wellness and fitness classes. The Plano campus is comparatively a small campus, which spread across an area of 16 acres. It features a total of four buildings and comprises a video game design school, guildhall, and departments of graduate-level programs. All three campuses provide all the facilities required by students. Several restaurants and cafes are located nearby the university. Public transport is also easily available.

The university comprises seven schools, namely the School of Education & Human Development, School of Theology, School of Business, School of Law, the College of Humanities & Sciences, School of Arts, and the School of Engineering.

The curriculum of the university has various courses that allow students to choose according to their interests. In addition, the university has 11 libraries within the premises. All the libraries feature a huge collection of books, journals, and research papers. Students can also access electronic resources maintained by the library. In addition, one among the 11 libraries features a screening room and multimedia center along with digital collections.
