Established in 1870, Steven Institute of Technology is a private institution that is known to be among the oldest technological institutes in the United States. The major focus of the institute is in the field of mechanical engineering. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
In 1971, the institute started admitting female students and by 1982, Stevens became the first major U.S. educational institution to require students to purchase and use personal computers in the classroom. At approximately this same time, Stevens also developed one of the nation’s first intranets, foretelling a revolution in information technology.
The institute offers 35 undergraduate degrees, 58 Master's degree programs, over 100 Graduate certificates, and twenty-two Ph.D. programs plus two interdisciplinary programs. The academic structure of the university includes a variety of subjects like civil engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, chemistry, business, mathematical science, physics, finance, and information system.

Moreover, some of the professionals visit the institute for guest lectures and workshop sessions to provide students with practical knowledge and exposure.
The campus houses the famous Samuel C. Williams Library which consists of a huge collection of books, journals, magazines, e-books, research papers, and various manuscripts by Leonardo da Vinci. It also features some beautiful and popular artwork by Alexander Calder. The campus provides all the facilities required by the students and it features a calm learning environment for the students. Also, restaurants and cafes are located nearby the campus. It is close to many departmental stores, ATMs, stationery shops, and chemist shops.
The institute has a list of some remarkable alumni that includes Charles Stewart Mott (Co-founder of General Motors Corporation), Alfred Fielding (Inventor of Bubble wrap), Fredrick Reins (Nobel Prize in Physics), Aaron Cohen (Director of NASA), Richard Reeves (Emmy award winner), Joseph Bushnell Ames (Renowned novelist), L. Sprague de Camp (Science fiction author), Igor Bensen (Founder of Bensen Aircraft), Koji Seki (Director of Hewlett-Packard Company) and John L. Hanigan (CEO of Genesco).
