Established in 1925, Texas A&M University Kingsville is an open research university which was earlier known as South Texas Normal School and Texas College of Arts and Industries. The institute is known to develop the first doctoral degree program in bilingual education, nationally. It is the oldest higher education institute in South Texas. The institute is associated with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1989, the institute became a part of the Texas A&M University system and it was renamed to its current name.
The campus of the institute is spread across an area of 250 acres. It aims to provide all the required facilities to students. The architecture of the campus is built in a Spanish revival style design. As the number of enrolments increased over the years, the university decided to extend the campus area in 2010. The campus features residential buildings, namely Turner hall, Lynch hall, Bishop's hall, and Martin hall. Around 2,000 students can be accommodated in the residential halls at the campus. Also, wellness and fitness centers are set on the campus.
Students experience a peaceful environment at the institution. The campus also has dining spaces and cafeterias. The campus is located nearby many medical stores and general stores. Also, some restaurants and cafes are close to the campus. Public transport is easily available from the university. Sports facilities and swimming pools are within the premises. This gives students a wide opportunity to choose among the courses according to their area of interest. Also, students get a chance to work as interns under professionals for various research projects.
The university has a list of some notable alumni that includes Michael T Boyd (Award-winning costume designer), Laura Canales (Famous singer), James Crumley (Crime novelist), J.E Brown (Politician), Carmen Lomas Garza (Renowned artist), Kimberly A Scott (Actress), Eva Longoria (Actress & Model), Tom Janik (Former American football player), Pete Saenz (Mayor of Laredo), and Armando Hinojosa (Sculptor).
