The University of Alabama at Birmingham was established in 1969. The highly-ranked public university is amongst the three major research institutes in Alabama. Started as an academic extension center in 1936, the university became an independent institution in 1969. The institute began operating in an old house that dwelled in central Birmingham with 116 students. It is accredited to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools ever since 1970. Its collaboration with UAHSF resulted in the establishment of the UAB Health System. Today, it is not only an internationally renowned research institute but also a popular academic health center.

The university campus is situated in Southside, a leading cosmopolitan neighborhood in Birmingham. It comprises of 100 buildings which include the college blocks, Recreation Center, UAB Health System, libraries and residence halls. UAB has two libraries that possess a comprehensive collection of rare and unique publications, photos, documents, etc. The Recreation Center has three floors that house game rooms, aerobics studios, gyms, etc. There are 6 residence halls on the campus named the Blazer Hall, Camp Hall, Blount Hall, Rast Hall, Denman Hall, and New Freshmen Residence Hall. Each of these residences provides on-campus accommodation to students. UAB offers Blazer Express, a free shuttle service that enables students and employees to commute to, from, and around the university.

UAB also offers more than 50 bachelor’s degrees, 90 graduate degree programs in liberal arts, business, engineering, education, social and behavioral sciences, dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, and public health.

There are about 21,923 students in the university which include 8,087 postgraduates and 13,836 undergraduates. The student population comprises of students from nearly 110 countries across the world. The university has nearly 12,676 employees including 2,882 faculty members. The student-faculty ratio at UAB is 19:1. Apart from this, UAB is Alabama's largest single-site employer, with more than 23,000 employees and an economic impact exceeding $7.15 billion annually on the state.

The university has more than 120,000 alumni living across the globe. Some of the notable alumni of UAB are Danya Barsalona (Professional Soccer Player), Deidre Downs (Miss America 2005), George A. Miller (popular psychologist and cognitive scientist), Melissa Springer (American Photojournalist), Larry Langford (Birmingham's Former Mayor), Walt Maddox (Tuscaloosa's Mayor), Vonetta Flowers (Gold Medalist bobsledder), Chris Hubbard (popular NFL Player) and Larry DeLucas (research scientist and an astronaut). The National Alumni Society of the university maintains a network between the institution and its alumni. It proudly honors the achievements of its alumni and also offers various scholarships to the current students of the university.

Q. Do I need to submit an immigration document if I’m an international student wishing to study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham?

A. No, the university won’t require you to submit an immigration document if you’re an international student living abroad when you’re applying for admission at the university or if you’re applying to an online-only course.

Q. How long would the University of Alabama authorities take to inform me if I’m selected?

A. The duration of the admission process is different for different courses. It also depends upon your individual circumstances. Once a decision has been taken regarding your application, you’ll be intimated about the same through an email.

Q. What application fee do I need to pay if I wish to get enrolled at a graduate school at the University of Alabama?

A. For domestic students, the standard graduate school fee is $50 and for international students, it is $60. It should be noted that there are a few courses which need you to pay a higher fee. Also, this application fee is non-refundable.

Q. What are the requirements with regard to graduate school admission that international applicants have to meet?

A. In order to be considered eligible for admission at the University of Alabama, international students need to submit documents which will prove that possess a degree equivalent to a four-year bachelor’s degree from the US. Students will also have to submit their original marksheets or transcripts, carrying an official stamp. Apart from these, they will have to submit a statement confirming the degree obtained by them.

Q. Do I need to send a letter of recommendation while applying for admission at the University of Alabama?

A. There are various courses which require the students to submit three letters of recommendation. Students applying for these courses will have to select recommenders during the online application process. The selected recommenders will be sent emails regarding the same and will be asked to revert electronically.

Q. If after receiving my offer letter am unable to travel to UAB’s campus, can I still study at the university?

A. In case a student is unable to travel to the university campus due to emergency situations or visa issues, you can enroll for UAB’s Online Pathway Programs. While waiting for the visa approval, you can start studying your opted degree course in your home country.

Q. Is it mandatory to submit an official standardized test score for admission at UAB?

A. Yes, you will have to submit the official standardized test score if the course you’ve applied for demands it.

Q. Do international applicants need to submit an English proficiency score for studying at UAB?

A. If you’re an international applicant from a non-English speaking nation, you will have to submit an English proficiency score, meeting the graduate school’s requirements. Only those English proficiency scores will be accepted which have been taken within a two-year duration from the date of submission of the application.

Q. What are the minimum English language proficiency scores which the UAB accepts?

A. TOEFL (80), TOEFL Essentials (8.5), IELTS (6.5), PTEA (53), IELA (176), Duolingo (120).

Q. What all funding options are available for international students wishing to study at UAB?

A. From external scholarships and federal loans to scholarships and grants and work-study, there are numerous options available which will help you fund your education. In work-study, undergraduate and graduate students with financial needs can do part-time jobs and earn to pay for their academic expenses.

Q. Will I be offered a residence if I’m a first-time freshman at UAB?

A. As of 2022, it has been made compulsory for all the first-time enrolled freshmen who completed their high school the same year or the year before their 1st semester at UAB to live on campus for the full academic year.
