The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a research-intensive public university situated in Alabama State. It is famous for its research facilities, academic health centers, and over 150 active student organizations. The UAB is a founding partner of the largest high-tech incubator¾ Innovation Department in the Southeast. It is the only public, four-year degree granting university in the state's largest metropolitan area. UAB is the largest research institution and the largest single employer in the state. What all courses are available to international students?


UAB offers more than 100 undergraduate and over 90 graduate programs in several disciplines. UG aspirants can choose any major and minor subjects by choose different disciplines or subject areas. At the graduate level, it has 50 master’s and 37 doctoral degree programs.

Academic English Program

Accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), UAB offers part-time and full-time English language program for students who wish to improve their academic, professional, or general English skills before joining a UAB program. It offers excellent preparation for students who are planning to enter a pathway, undergraduate, or graduate study.

 

Pathway Programs

Pathways allow students who do not meet academic or English language requirements to begin earning degree credits. Pathways combine academic skills development, degree course work, and intensive language study, to help students enter a UAB program with ease. These programs are available at both undergraduate and graduate level. For graduate pathway, minimum requirement includes:

  • GPA: 2.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 65
  • IELTS: 5.5

What are the eligibility requirements?


International UG applicants who meet the academic and English requirements for the undergraduate degree program can apply directly to the university program of their choice. UG aspirants should have completed Grade 12 and have the necessary subject credits as per their chosen course. Apart from this, any one of the following test scores is required to prove English proficiency:

What all documents are needed for application?


Transcripts and other documents must be in the original language of the international institution as well as in English. Applicants submitting an approved transcript evaluation are not required to submit English translations. The university accepts transcript evaluations from World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators, or Josef Silny & Associates, Inc.

Application & Tuition Fees


Is there any application fees?


The application fee for undergraduate programs is USD 40, and for graduate programs is USD 60. Certain programs have higher fees which will be assessed at the time of application. All application fees are non-refundable.


What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?


The tuition ranges shown are based on Fall 2020-2021 rates for two semesters (Fall and Spring). With each fresh academic year, the university may increase its base tuition.

Scholarships & Financial Aid


Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?


UAB provides limited number of options of scholarships to international students. Applicants can choose from IB scholarships, departmental scholarships, performance scholarships and more. They need to submit their scholarship applications in the Blazer Scholarship Management and Resource Tool (BSMART) that opens by October. Some scholarships may require a supplemental application in addition to the general application.

The UAB International Scholarship of USD 7,500 (annually) is offered to international students who are enrolled in a full-time undergraduate degree program. It is a merit-based scholarship awarded on a first-come, first-served basis as the funds are available and renewable for a total of four years (eight academic semesters). Aspirants who receive governmental scholarships or other external support are not eligible to receive this award. To be eligible for this, UG applicants need to meet the following requirements:

  • Have a high school certificate with 3.0/4.0 minimum GPA
  • Should not be enrolled in post-secondary job
  • Hold an F-1 visa

When do the admissions start?


UAB offers admission to international students under three intakes, namely Fall, Spring, and Summer. The application deadlines of these intakes vary for dates vary for undergraduate and graduate programs. Students are advised to apply as soon as possible for better prospects. When will I hear from the university after I submit my application?


The Graduate School applications are processed within one to three business days of submission. UG students might hear from the university in four to eight weeks after applying.


Student Diversity & Preferred Profile


What are the chances to get into this university?


As of 2020, the acceptance rate of the UAB was 73.7%, making it quite a selective university. In 2019, it witnessed a 0.72% increase in total enrollment and a 4.78% increase doctoral program enrollments. Even though the admissions committee looks at a student’s profile holistically, an average GPA of 3/4 or above is preferred to maximize one’s chances of getting admitted. Admission decisions for international MBA aspirants are based on the GMAT, TOEFL/IELTS, and their undergraduate record. In Fall 2019, UAB enrolled a total of 22,080 students, including 1,110 international students from over 30 countries.

Part Time Work While Studying


Can I work while studying here?


The university allows students enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program to work on and off-campus. International students must meet the minimum requirements and have a legal study visa to work in the country. Students can work up to 20 hours per week while the university is in session and up to 37.5 hours per week during breaks (such as Spring Break and Winter Break). UAB offers various resources to assist students in job search, both on and off-campus, such as Handshake and the UAB Career Center. The Collat School of Business and the School of Engineering have specific career services offices available to their students. Other resources include:

  • Job fairs
  • Applying directly campus departments or organizations
  • Networking

 

On-campus employments refers to work authorization under UAB, meaning students will be working physically on the property belonging to UAB and will be paid by an entity that directly provides services to UAB students as part of the university. As a part of on-campus employment, students can work in:

  • UAB departments, schools, labs, computer centers, tutoring opportunities, etc.
  • Restaurants located in UAB buildings
  • The campus bookstore in the Hill Student Center
  • Campus Dining Services (i.e., Sodexo)
  • Campus Recreation Center

Note: Students with graduate assistantships are not eligible for additional on-campus employment, since all graduate assistantships assume 20 hours of work per week. International students are not eligible for work-study jobs as they are limited to US citizens and permanent residents receiving federal financial aid per US government regulations.

Is on-campus housing available?


The UAB provides on-campus housing options and off-campus housing assistance to the all students. University housing includes 2,500-bed spaces, with the options of single and double rooms, suites, and apartment-style rooms. The university has six fully-furnished residence halls that comes with air conditioners, a kitchen, floor lounges, laundry facilities, bathrooms, and other instant facilities.
