Established on March 30, 1871, as a land-grant institution named Arkansas Industrial University, the University of Arkansas (the U of A) is one of the top-notch universities in the U.S. The flagship campus of the University of Arkansas System started operating in 1872 with a class of seven boys and a girl. Also, the total enrolment increased to over 100 students in the first year. In 1885, the university completed the work on a university hall, which is now known as 'Old Main'. The university's first class graduated in 1876 and awarded the first honorary degree in 1878. In the year 1899, the university acquired its current name following an editorial campaign by The Ozark.

The student-faculty ratio at the institution is 19:1. By the end of FY2019, the endowment market value was $1.221 billion, while the university registered research expenses worth $175 million by the end of FY2018. With sports affiliation from National Collegiate Athletic Association, it maintains eight men's and eleven women's teams in thirteen sports. The teams participate in the South-eastern Conference and other competitions as the Razorbacks. Additionally, there are around 350 registered student organizations that focus on religious, global, cultural, honorary, professional services and special interests. The university boasts of an extensive network of alumni that includes Brent Bradshaw (Writer for television), Barry A. Vann (Author), Ed. Wilson (Fox Broadcasting Company's President), Corey Beck (Ex-NBA player) and T. J. Holmes (Ex-CNN anchor)
