The history of the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) dates back to the time when it was Anna Blake School. The school was established in 1891 and offered education in the fields of industrial arts and home economics. The state took over the school in 1909 and changed its name to Santa Barbara State Normal School. In 1921, it was renamed Santa Barbara State Teachers College and started growing its curriculum in the field of liberal arts. In 1944, the institute's name was changed again to Santa Barbara College of the University of California until it was given its current name in 1958. Currently, the academic structure of the university consists of five schools. It holds the accreditation of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Amir Abo-Shaer is a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award-winning teacher and mechanical engineer. Robert Ballard is a deep-sea explorer who discovered the Titanic. Leroy Chiao is a successful space shuttle astronaut. Michael Douglas is a popular actor and producer who has also been honored with the Academy Award. Harris Faulkner is a well-known TV journalist. Scott Frank is a renowned filmmaker, songwriter, and director. Logan Green is the CEO and co-founder of Lyft. Elizabeth Gabler works as the president of Fox 2000 Pictures. Carol Greider is a Nobel Prize-winner in physiology and medicine. Many other distinguished names are associated with UCSB.
