Also known as UCSC or UC Santa Cruz, the University Of California Santa Cruz is an open research university. The construction took a year and the university was able to accommodate its first batch of students in the year 1965. The campus was established with the intent to offer contemporary architecture, progressive teaching methods, and undergraduate research. The university offers a number of courses including over 60 undergraduate majors and nearly 35 minors, with graduate programs in 33 fields. Most opted undergraduate majors include Business Management, Economics, Art, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Psychology. Interdisciplinary programs include Visual Studies, Computational Media, New Media, and Digital Arts, Environmental Studies, and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies.
The site of the university’s main campus was chosen over a competing proposal to form the campus closer to the population-centric location of San Jose. The campus is located 121 km south of San Francisco and covers an area of 2,000 acres. It comes under the 10 campuses of the system of the University of California. The university is known for its student political activism. And, it has also evolved into a contemporary research university by offering a range of graduate and undergraduate degrees.
In 2020, UC Santa Cruz was ranked amongst the best universities at (No. 37) for research influence, based on the number of times its faculty’s published work is cited by scholars globally for research citations. Students are encouraged to complete a yearlong exchange programme with a partner university like the University of New Hampshire or the University of New Mexico.

UC Santa Cruz along with the University of California Irvine (UCI) was the youngest university to gain admittance to the AAU. The university is formed to provide education in the field of liberal arts but it has rapidly gained popularity for its graduate-level natural science research program. Moreover, it has also welcomed plant physiologist Kenneth V. Thimann.
Other than this, the university has produced several Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists. Notable alumni also include some of the popular actors, comedians, and filmmakers like Miranda July. Some of the popular names include Maya Rudolph (actress and comedian), Huey P Newton (co-founder of the Black Panther Party), Jonah Peretti (creator of Huffington Post and BuzzFeed) and Cary Fukunaga (filmmaker).
