Established as Houston Junior College in 1927, the University of Houston (abbreviated as UH) is a public institution of research-centric higher education. It transformed into a university in 1934 and became a state institution in 1963. In 1977, it joined the newly incorporated University of Houston System. The Carnegie Foundation has elevated the university to the Tier One status. It has affiliations from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, Oak Ridge Associated Universities and Universities Research Association.

UH has its main campus in the southeast part of Houston. The 667-acre site features excellent academic, administrative, recreational and various support facilities. The university maintains a dynamic environment with its art exhibits, restaurants and cafes, activity centres, athletic events and live performances. The M.D. Anderson Library houses a high-tech recording studio and organizes daily events and technology training. UH's Student Centre is home to study and social areas, student organizations, a food court, IT services, campus shops and a game room that also has a bowling alley. The university's football team has 40,000-seat TDECU Stadium. The baseball team has 3,500-seat Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park and the basketball team has Fertitta Centre. Other highlights of the campus are Blaffer Art Museum, Lynn Eusan Park, Moores Opera Centre and Cullen Performance Hall. The campus also has several housing options from single suites to shared apartments. The university has 25 research centres that are equipped with high-tech equipment and modern technology.

UH comprises 16 academic schools and colleges as well as an interdisciplinary Honor's College offering 110 undergraduate minors and majors, and 120 postgraduate and 47 doctoral programmes. Students can choose to pursue programmes in a wide array of fields like architecture, design, arts, business, education, management, engineering, hotel management, law, social sciences, medicine, mathematics, nursing and pharmacy. The university is home to over 43,500 students and more than 2,600 faculty members. University Career Services (UCS) offers a plethora of services to help students for a successful career like career counselling, on-campus recruitment and vocational assessment.

The University of Houston has a large alumni network of more than 285,000 graduates. Some notable names in the alumni list are Wade Phillips (Coach in the National Football League), Jim Nantz (Sportscaster for CBS), Hakeem Olajuwon (Former Basketball Player), Star Jones (Journalist, Lawyer, Television Personality, Author and Fashion Designer), Dennis Quaid (Renowned Actor), and Christine Hà (Chef, TV Host and Writer).
