The University of Houston (UH) is renowned for its heritage of academic excellence and continues to develop strong traditions. The student-to-faculty ratio is 23:1, and 26.2 percent of its classes have less than 20 students. This encourages one-on-one sessions with the faculty and focused attention to each student.

Courses Offered

 

What all courses are available to international students?

 

UH offers 250 undergraduate majors and minors, 108 master’s degrees, and 50 doctoral and professional degrees. It also has various certificate and dual-degree programs at the graduate level.

 

Intensive English Program (IEP)

Offered through the Language and Culture Center, IEP is designed to build confidence and enhance UH aspirants' English skills. Students who do not meet the English proficiency requirements can undertake this program to meet the English proficiency requirements of their chosen major. The program has six levels of instruction from beginning to advanced (shown below), and students who complete Level 6 do not need to provide a TOEFL/IELTS score while seeking admission to the UH. This applies to all undergraduate programs and a growing number of graduate programs.

Eligibility & Documents Required

 

What are the eligibility requirements?

 

For undergraduate programs, international students need to apply with their Grade 12 score. Score requirements will vary as per their chosen major/subject, but usually, an equivalent GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale) is expected. SAT/ACT scores are only required for special programs. Adding to this, any one of these scores is required to determine English language proficiency:

Graduate aspirants need to complete a bachelor’s degree before applying for any UH program. Subject and score requirements are course-specific. Apart from this, standardized exam scores are required as per course/school and any one of these English language proficiency scores:

What all documents are needed for application?

 

UG applicants need to send their official secondary or high school academic records. UH prefer these to be submitted electronically through a school counselor via e-mail or the Common Application. They can also be sent by mail to this address:

These official transcripts must either state "official", have the institution's seal, a signature by a school official, or an official watermark. The Office of Admissions determines the validity of the transcript, and its reserves the right to request additional or different copies if required.

 

Graduate applicants need to submit scanned copies of all documents during the application process. Credential evaluations are completed in-house at the Graduate School as UH does not accept outside evaluations.

 

Note: Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by certified translated copies.

Application & Tuition Fees

 

Is there any application fees?

 

The undergraduate application fee is USD 90 whether applied through Apply Texas Application or the Common Application portal. International students need to pay USD 80 for graduate programs and USD 25 for non-degree (certificate-based programs). All application fees are non-refundable.

 

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

 

UG international applicants pay the same tuition fee and other charges, which apply to non-residents of the state. The university estimates over USD 26,000 per year based on two 15-hour semesters in the 2020-2021 academic year. This amount includes tuition and other required fees. This fee may vary based on the course and academic college a student has chosen.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

 

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

 

UH offers several scholarships for all international applicants. Scholarship criteria vary, but most scholarships are based on academic credentials, such as class rank, GPA, and/or standardized test scores. To be eligible for a university-funded scholarship, applicants need to:

  • Complete the UH application for admission using either the Apply Texas Application or the Common Application. Students need to submit only one application.
  • Complete the application for admission by the priority scholarship deadline. Scholarships may be awarded after the priority deadline, if funds are available.

When do the admissions start?

 

UH is open for admissions around the year, i.e., in the Spring, Summer, and Fall intakes. Most of the programs are offered in the Fall and Spring intakes. Check the university website to know which courses are offered in each intake.

Graduate applicants need to submit their applications directly to UH through the university’s ApplyWeb portal. Professional programs such as Law, Nursing, Optometry, and Pharmacy have separate application portals. What are the chances to get into this university?

 

UH is considered a moderate competitive institution with an acceptance rate of over 60 percent. It usually admits students who score in the top 36 percent of the applicant pool. Thus, just meeting the admission requirements will not ensure a place in UH. A strong academic record, test scores, and relevant experience are of utmost importance. Supplementary documents such as SOP and LORs are also taken into account. As per the university, students who meet the State of Texas’ Uniform Admissions Policy and the requirements below are assured admission:

Part Time Work While Studying

 

Can I work while studying here?

 

Students with F-1 Visa and a valid I-20 issued by UH are permitted to work part-time on-campus for up to 20 hours per week. Students can work full-time or up to 40 hours a week during official school breaks and annual vacation. On-campus employment includes working for the University of Houston or its related employers.
