Established in 1798, the University of Louisville is an open institution that is known to be the first Open University in the United States. Earlier, the university had several names such as Jefferson Seminary, Louisville Medical Institute, and Louisville College. The university grew rapidly from 1999 to 2006. It became the fastest-growing medical institute as per the National Institute of Health Rankings. In 1837, the university developed a medical institute. Over the years, the university developed many more departments of liberal arts, dentistry, music, social work, engineering, and law. The university is associated with the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and Coalition of Urban & Metropolitan Universities.
The university features four campuses, Belknap campus, Health Science campus, Shelby campus, and the International campus. The Belknap campus has 12 academic colleges. It features the Student's Activities center, Rauch Planetarium and Lutz Hall which houses the departments of Sociology, Art, History, Anthropology, Geography, and Engineering. The Health Sciences campus is the main campus. It is home to two major hospitals and some specialty hospitals. This campus has a ten-story University hospital and a fourteen-story Medical Research Centre. The Shelby campus is spread over 230 acres of land. This campus has three buildings where all the seminars, events and competitions organized by the university take place. The university has decided to develop a research center at this campus. The fourth campus, the International campus is home to students of the MBA program.

The university has various colleges and schools, namely the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business, College of Human Development, the School of Dentistry, School of Nursing, School of Social Work, School of Music and the School of Information Sciences & Public Health. The faculty members of the university are well-experienced and aim to provide the best of knowledge to the students. In addition, the university offers an Honors program as well. Admission to this requires a 3.35 GPA or above. Courses in this program majorly focus on writing, discussion, and reading.
