Established in 1852, the University of Massachusetts is an open research university that is associated with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, American Association of State Colleges and Universities and Urban 13. The university is also called UMass Boston. Earlier, the university was known as Boston State College. The freshman classes began in 1965 with 1,240 undergraduate students. In 1966, the university published its first student's newspaper, ‘The Mass Media’. By 1968, the number of enrolments grew from 1,240 to 2,500 students. In the same year, a group of students started the folk music radio station, WUMB-FM.
The campus of the university is spread over 120 acres of land. It is known as the Harbour campus. The campus comprises a campus center, university hall, Wheatley hall, science center, McCormack Hall, Healey library, administration building, service & supply building, integrated science complex, athletic center, east residence hall, west residence hall, and west garage. The students are provided with all the required facilities at the campus. Many restaurants and cafes are nearby the campuses. Also, it is close to some stationery shops, departmental stores and chemist shops for student's convenience. Public transport is easily available from the campus.

The university offers undergraduate degree programs and postgraduate degree programs. There a total of 16,164 students at the university. The undergraduate program consists of 12,714 students and about 3,450 students are under the postgraduate program. The academic structure of the university comprises eight colleges, namely Liberal Arts College, the College of Science & Mathematics, College of Management, College of Education & Human Development, College of Nursing & Health Sciences, College for Environment, the College of Advancing & Professional Studies, and the Public & Community service college. The students are guided under experienced faculty members. The university also offers student exchange programs. The students get a wide scope to choose amongst the broad range of subjects.
