Established in 1851, The University of Minnesota is an open research university associated with AAU, BTAA, and APLU. The university is considered among the best open research universities in the United States and has been ranked 14th in research activity. The academic structure of the university includes an undergraduate degree program, postgraduate degree, and doctoral level programs. The scientists and faculty members of the university have made notable researches and developments like a precursor to World Wide Web, Gopher, data analysis related to gravitational theories, the invention of the point-contact transistor, and the development of the artificial pacemaker. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus stretches more than 1,150 acres in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Nestled around the scenic Mississippi River, the Minneapolis campus sits under the shadow of a sparkling downtown skyline. The nearby St. Paul campus is home to rolling green space and historic architecture. The area offers culturally diverse arts and entertainment and is home to the MSP International Airport. The university consists of 3 centers and 3 institutes, namely Centre for Cognitive Sciences, Centre for Law and Values in Health, Environment and Life Sciences, and the Minnesota Population Centre. The university has a notable list of alumni that involves Herb Brookes (Hockey coach in the Olympics), Nick Clegg (Deputy Prime Minister of UK), Walter Mondale (42nd VP of the United States), Bob Dylan (Nobel Prize for Literature), Hubert Humphrey (38th VP of the United States), Norman Borlaug (Nobel Prize in Peace) and Deke Slayton (Astronaut).
