Founded in the year 1956, the University of New Orleans (UNO) is a public research university. It is a part and member of the University of Louisiana System. Also, it is a member of the Urban 13 association. UNO currently maintains 4 colleges, namely the College of Liberal Arts, College of Sciences, and College of Business Administration, Education, and Human Development. It conducts undergraduate programs, graduate programs, general education, professional and continuing education, online degree programs, and service-learning.
The principal academic departments are dedicated to subjects like Business Administration, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Education and Human Development, Sciences, Arts, Hotel, restaurant and Tourism, School of Naval Architecture, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The research projects of the university are also extremely important supporting the growth of scholarly as well as creative enterprises of the university and fostering innovative ideas into fruition promoting sustainable economic growth.
The students of UNO are eligible to avail of several financial aids in the form of scholarships, grants, and educational loans. The Student Employment facility is also available. There are Louisiana Go Grant, New Orleans Scholars Program, PELL, and SEOG Grants, and TEACH Grant. There are scholarship facilities for domestic undergraduates, international undergraduates, veteran, active, military and military spouse/children, and domestic transfer students. Based on the varied interests of students, there are over 125 active students clubs and organizations.
There are special campus health services, career services, Greek Life, disability services, recreation, and intramural sports and several testing services. The REC Centre of UNO deserves a special mention. There are 14 varsity sports teams of UNO, performing under NCAA Division I. The men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, and track, and field (both indoor and outdoor). The women's sports include basketball, beach volleyball, cross country, tennis, and track and field (both indoor and outdoor), volleyball. Football is played as a non-varsity sport.
