Established in 1842, Notre Dame received its official college charter in 1844. The first degrees from the college were awarded in 1849.

The university has more than 12,000 students and over 1,300 faculty members. Some of the university's latest research includes work on family conflict and child development, genome mapping, increasing trade deficit of the United States with China, fluid mechanics, computational science and engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and marketing trends on the Internet.
The University of Notre Dame also organizes a number of sports events throughout the year. It offers opportunities to learn and enjoy sports including baseball, basketball, cross-country, fencing, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and track & field; women's sports include basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
This university has a list of notable alumni including Eric F. Wieschaus, who is a winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in medicine and Philip Majerus, who is a discoverer of the cardioprotective effects of aspirin. There are many people in media who had studied at the university such as talk show hosts Regis Philbin and Phil Donahue, television and radio personalities Mike Golic and Hannah Storm.
