The University of Pittsburgh is a distinguished public research university originally established in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. After shifting to its current location in the Oakland neighborhood of the city it was renamed The University of Pittsburgh in 1908. It was a private institution until 1966 after becoming part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education. It includes 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges located at its urban Pittsburgh campus. Pittsburgh is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU) that includes 63 leading doctorate-granting research institutions in North America. Since its establishment, Pittsburgh has been known for its liberal arts education and tops in the field of sciences, research, humanities, and others.
The campus size is 145 acres accommodating 23,466 full time and 1,087 part-time undergraduates and 7,280 full time and 1,911 part-time Graduate/Doctoral Students. In 2018, the university was the third-largest recipient of federally sponsored health research funding among U.S. universities and received research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
As per the National Science Foundation, in 2018, the institution spent $1 billion on research and development activities making it 14th in the nation. The university is one of the top research educational institutions and recognized as the 'best value' in higher education by leading publications. Some of the notable alumni of Pittsburgh are Noble Prize winners that include Paul Lauterbur for his extraordinary work in magnetic resonance imaging, Philip Hench for finding of the hormone cortisone and Noble Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai who was the founder of Green Belt Movement. The other known alumni are Vladimir Zworykin who is popularly known as the father of television. It is one of the country's leading producers of both Fulbright scholars and Peace Corps volunteers.

- Upperclass students can choose apartment-style accommodations, which offer a more independent living environment with modified services and amenities.
