University of South Florida Governor of Florida, LeRoy Collins, signed into law House Bill on 18th June 1955, to create a new state university in Hillsborough County. Established in the year 1956, University of South Florida (USF) began to be recognized by its current name on 22nd October 1957 for being the state's southernmost university at that time. The first president of this institution is John S. Allen. Initially, the university was built on Fowler Avenue property. The space used to be occupied by a private civilian airport which had served as the Hillsborough Army Airfield at the time of World War II. Of-late, the university has 14 colleges that are dedicated to a wide variety of fields in education and even holds the accreditation of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). USF has its vibrant campuses located in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee. These campuses, together, serve 50,000 plus students.

With a large network of over 228,000 alumni, USF is associated with several notable people. Alan Boss is a successful astrophysicist and has been the chair of many International Astronomical Unions. Aasif Mandvi is a popular actor and comedian. Mark Consuelos is an actor well-known for his role of Hiram Lodge in Riverdale and Mateo Santos in All My Children. Hulk Hogan, is a former pro wrestler, television personality, actor, musician and entrepreneur. J. R. Reed used to be an American football safety. Lobo is a famous singer-songwriter who scored several U.S. Top 10 hits in the early 1970s. Many other distinguished and successful people are the alumni of USF.
