The University of Southern California (USC) is a private research university in Los Angeles, California, which is sought after by students for pursuing courses in technology, international business, and arts. Its inception goes back to the 1870s when Robert Maclay Widney, an American lawyer and judge, took the first step toward the university’s foundation. In 1879, with the help of three men who contributed land for the university’s establishment, the USC university came into being. A lesser-known fact is that the number of Olympians produced by the university is larger than those produced by any other US university.

The University of Southern California ranking has been in a pretty good state. In 2022, it has been ranked 19th among over 1,000 public and private institutions by The Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education. It has also been recognised among the top 20 California universities, both public and private. Among the western U.S universities, it holds the 3rd position overall and it also ranks 4th among the best 25 schools, in terms of student engagement.

USC sits only 3 miles away from Downtown, LA. The university park campus is a sight worth seeing, with attractions such as sculptures, fountains, ancient architecture and much more adorning its face. A residential community, the majority of the students pursuing an undergraduate course here reside in or around the campus. There are restaurants, cafes, and dining hall options available, both on and off-campus, where students can relish a buffet, snacks or any other kind of meal. Apart from the regular UG and PG courses, over 100 master’s degrees, certificate and PhD courses are taught online.

In 2022 over 71,000 applications were received for the fall freshman batch. The University of California acceptance rate currently stands at 12.5%. There has been a surge in the number of students who are the first in their families to attend the university for past 5 years. As far as the regular enrolment is concerned, in 2021-2022, the total number of students enrolled is 28,500, with 21,000 studying a UG course and 28,500 pursuing graduate and professional studies. At present, 1,735 Indian students are studying at USC.

Students wishing to obtain university housing are suggested to apply for the same as early as possible due to the demand being higher than the supply. Around 1,500 graduate housing facilities are available for students which are well-furnished. You will also find a kitchen attached in most of these. For the convenience of the students, laundry facilities are just walking distance away from the campus. All the residences have cable TV and wireless internet access.

Over $640 million in scholarships and aid are provided by the University of Southern California. A new USC initiative helps students, with a yearly income of $80,000 or less, to study tuition-free. Undergraduate students can fund their education through various scholarships provided by the university, state, federal or private agencies and the best part is that they don’t have to repay the same.

Talking about the university alumni, Neil Armstrong (first human to walk on the moon) was a product of USC. Other notable personalities include John Wayne (American actor), George Lucas (American Film Director), Jonathan Ke Quan (Vietnamese-American actor), Susan Downey (American Film Producer), Melody Thomas Scott (American Actress), etc.
