The University of Tennessee (UT) is a public institution of higher education and research established in the year 1794. This university was formerly known as the Bount College in 1794, East Tennessee College in 1807, and East Tennessee University in 1840 before it got the present name. The university was shut down during the Civil War; however in 1869, under the Morrill Act 1862, the state-funded the university to reopen it. In 1892, women started being admitted to the university for a temporary period followed by the acceptance of African-American students in 1952. It has accreditation from many reputed organizations, including the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the Universities Research Association, and the Oak Ridge Association University.
