Established in 1838, Virginia Commonwealth University is an open research university that is associated with ORAU, SURA, CUMU, APLU, Urban 13, and GCU. The university opened its medical department in 1854. Later on, it developed the college of medicine and the college of physicians and surgeons in 1893. Over the years, the university expanded its faculties and campuses because of the growing number of students. The university began its first classes of Arts and Humanities with 1,200 undergraduate students. The School of Arts became the largest professional course in the United States.

VCU has two main campuses, namely the Monroe Park Campus and the MCV Campus. The Monroe campus was known as the Academic Campus of VCU. It consists of about 40 buildings that are constructed with a mixture of modern and vintage-style designs. This campus was built in 1900. The MCV Campus houses the Medical Centre of the university including the School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and the School of Nursing. Also, the Massey Cancer Centre is located within the campus. Both the campuses are surrounded by greenery and provide a peaceful learning environment for students.

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level programs. The academic structure of the university comprises of various subjects and courses that are categorized into a number of departments. Some of the well-known departments are the School of Business, School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Engineering, and the School of Medicine.
