Founded in the year 1890, Washington State University is an open research university which is associated with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. The university is said to be among the oldest universities in Western America. Also, it is the second-largest university in Washington. Earlier, the university was known as the School of Science of the State of Washington. The Atomic Energy Commission Grants has made huge funding for the development of the university and its faculties. The medical school of the university was among the best and the only three medical schools in Washington. The university is governed by a Board of Regents. Presently, there are 10 members on the board.
The campus is spread over an area of 620 acres of land. It is constructed in a Neo-Georgian style design which is planned and built by the famous architect, Paul Thiry. The infrastructure of the campus is well-maintained. The students are provided with all the facilities required. The campus houses three halls, the Thompson Hall, Steven Hall, and the Bryan Hall. These are known to be the oldest buildings on the campus. The Thompson Hall is home to the College of Arts & Sciences and the Foreign Language Department.
Steven Hall is a residence hall for the female students of the university and Bryan Hall is a four-sided tower that displays the wall clock. In addition, the campus features residence halls, namely the Hill hall which includes 4 buildings, the Northside hall that has 5 buildings, the Southcentral and Upper-division halls include six buildings and the Complex hall comprises of three buildings. There are 65 departments involved in the curriculum that are categorised into ten colleges, namely College of Agricultural, Human & Natural Sciences, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, the College of Architecture & Engineering, Carson College of Business, the College of Medicine, College of Communication, the College of Education, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. The students are guided under experienced faculty members. The university is known to have a peaceful learning environment. With an undergraduate enrollment of 24,470 students and a total enrollment of 29,686 students, it is regarded as the second-largest institution of higher education in Washington state.
The university has a remarkable list of alumni that includes Betty Feves (Renowned artist), Art Gilmore (Voice actor), Gary Larson (Famous cartoonist), Sherman Alexie (Filmmaker), Scott MacDonald (Actor), Frances Yeend (Opera singer), Paul Allen (Co-founder of Microsoft), Clint Cole (Co-founder of Heart stream), Paul Enquist (Olympic Gold medalist in Men's double scull), Philip Abelson (Physicist), Irwin Rose (Nobel Prize in Chemistry), and Allan Wilson (Molecular evolutionist)
