The origin of Yale University, a private Ivy League research university, can be traced back to 1640s when colonial clergymen tried to establish a local college. A charter was adopted by the Connecticut legislature in 1701 to open a Collegiate School. This Collegiate School was renamed as Yale University in the honor of Elihu Yale, a Welsh merchant who donated books and goods to the School. True to its mission statement of educating aspiring leaders, Yale graduates were influential leaders in the American Revolution and four Yale graduates had signed the Declaration of Independence.
