Yale University has been the center of research and innovation for the past 300 years. From participating in the American Revolution to signing the Declaration of Independence, Yale graduates have been an integral part of American history. Its alumni consist of 62 Nobel laureates, five Fields Medalists, and three Turing Award winners. In 2011, it established the Yale-NUS College in Singapore to redefine liberal arts and science education in Asia. This college was formed as a collaboration between Yale University and the National University of Singapore, making it the first liberal arts college in Asia. It supports a curriculum that includes both Western and Asian traditions.

A private Ivy League research institution, Yale has more than 4,800 faculty, including both visiting and resident professors. The student-to-faculty ratio of Yale College is 6:1 and 73.4 percent of its classes have less than 20 students. This allows flexibility in teaching and ensures maximum student-teacher interaction. Most majors require a final-year coursework submission, be it a project, essay, research, or portfolio. Thus, the student-teacher interaction opportunity enables students to complete their coursework by scheduling one-on-one sessions with their professors.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

Yale is committed to admitting deserving students irrespective of their financial circumstances and ensures that they graduate without excessive debt. Thus, it offers a range of scholarships, financial aid, grants, and fellowship depending on the program/course. In the 2018-19 academic year, 3,149 freshmen students received scholarships/grants. The amount awarded to each student as a scholarship/grant by Yale was between USD 600 and USD 82,000. On the other hand, most of the master’s aspirants do not receive any financial aid. However, some programs may offer limited funding. In some professional programs, a student is automatically considered for a merit scholarship. There is no separate procedure or application required to be eligible for this scholarship. PhD aspirants are offered a fellowship that covers the full cost of tuition along with a 12-month stipend and free health insurance. Visit the financial aid website for more information.

Student Diversity & Preferred Profile

What are the chances to get into this university?

While Yale looks at the holistic profile of a candidate, a strong academic background can further add value to your application. Academic strength is the first thing the admission department considers while going through a student’s profile. This further ensures that the student, if admitted, is academically prepared for the rigorous curriculum of the university. The Yale College acceptance rate for Freshman Class 2024 was 6.6 percent. Adding to this, the university advises aspirants to pursue what they love and ‘be yourself’. Students should be honest and talk about their interests, goals, and how Yale can help them in achieving those goals. In short, the supplementary essays matter as much as the academic transcripts. Certain programs involve an interview process as well, which is another opportunity to present oneself as a unique individual. An aspirant should focus less on what the interviewer wants to hear and instead highlight one’s attributes such as leadership, ability to collaborate, active community service, and the ability to contribute to classes.

How many Indian/international students are studying at the university?

Yale claims to house over 5,000 international students and scholars from more than 120 countries. In the Freshmen Class 2019, China, Canada, India, South Korea, United Kingdom, and Germany were the most represented countries.

Part Time Work While Studying

Can I work while studying here?

International students can work part-time or full-time according to their visa status. J-1 Visa students can undergo Academic Training based on the degree level and length of the program. They are allowed to work part-time or full-time but not more than 20 hours per week. F-1 Visa students need to be enrolled in a full-time degree course to work while studying. They can work on-campus part-time while the school is in session and full-time during vacations and holidays, but not more than 20 hours per week. Students opting for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) need to follow specific rules given on the Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS) website. Working off-campus may be allowed if a student can prove “severe economic hardship caused by circumstances beyond their control, which arose after obtaining the F-1 students status”. For this, the application needs to be endorsed by the OISS and then submitted to USCIS for approval. See the OISS website for details.

Campuses & Accommodation

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

Yale has two campuses in the US —the main campus and the West campus. These two campuses constitute the 14 schools/department, including the Yale College (undergraduate), Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the 12 professional schools. It also has a separate center for the interdisciplinary study of sacred music, worship, and the related arts known as the Institute of Sacred Music.

Is on-campus housing available?

Students may live either on-campus or off-campus at Yale. UG first-year students are either assigned a residential college or live at Old Campus and later shift to a residential college in the second year. Some students may opt to live off-campus as well. For students in the graduate and the professional school, the option for on-campus accommodation is limited. The university advises to apply for on-campus housing as early as possible and not wait till the last date. The application starts on April 22 and continues till mid-summer. For living off-campus, students can refer to the Off-Campus Living website to find rooms, apartments, or houses to rent. Elm City Partners is another website where students can find Yale-owned properties for rent. For more details, check the OISS website.
