The Humboldt University of Berlin was established in 1801. With four faculties of medicine, law, theology, and philosophy, the university started operating with just 256 students and 52 staff members. The former Palace of Prussia's Prince Heinrich was donated to the university by Friedrich Wilhelm III and was turned into the university's first building. The university was shut down during World War II but was reopened in January 1946. The turmoil and protests of the post-war era led to the split of the university and resulted in the establishment of the Free University of Berlin. Currently, the university has nine faculties, three central institutes, five central units, and nine interdisciplinary centers.
The former palace of Prince Heinrich is the university's representative seat. The university's institutes are located on three campuses. Campus Mitte houses the institutes of law, arts and humanities, theology and economics and business studies. Campus Adlershof is the contemporary, high-tech campus that is home to the institutes of natural sciences and mathematics. Adlershof is also the location of the largest European technology parks. Institutes of life sciences are located on the Campus Nord. The infrastructure of this campus is still under development. As soon as the work is completed, numerous facilities and institutes will be moved or built here to be in close proximity to the Charité Medical School.
